Late actor Ryan O\u2019Neal<\/a>\u00a0was one of Hollywood\u2019s leading men for decades \u2014\u00a0with his off-screen love life making headlines, too.<\/p>\n

On Dec. 8, the \u201cLove Story\u201d actor\u2019s son, Patrick O\u2019Neal, announced his father\u2019s death with a post on\u00a0Instagram<\/a>, describing it as the \u201ctoughest thing\u201d he ever had to say and described his father as a \u201cHollywood legend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patrick O\u2019Neal is one of four of Ryan O\u2019Neal\u2019s children. The actor welcomed Patrick O\u2019Neal \u2014 a sportscaster\u2014 with his second wife, actor Leigh Taylor-Young, in 1967.<\/p>\n

Prior to this, the late actor had two other children with his ex-wife and actor Joanna Moore. His first child, Tatum O\u2019Neal, starred alongside him in the 1973 comedy-drama \u201cPaper Moon,\u201d for which she won an Oscar.<\/p>\n

Ryan O\u2019Neal\u2019s life as a father was famously dotted with periods of estrangement from his children. In a\u00a02009 interview with Vanity Fair<\/a>, he largely attributed their alienation to his incapability to be a father.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a hopeless father. I don\u2019t know why. I don\u2019t think I was supposed to be a father,\u201d he said. \u201cJust look around at my work \u2014 they\u2019re either in jail or they should be. I have nice grandchildren, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatum O\u2019Neal was born in 1963. Her mother was actor Joanna Moore, who appeared in series like\u00a0\u201cAlfred Hitchcock Presents\u201d and \u201cPerry Mason.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 1974, Tatum O\u2019Neal became the youngest person in history to win an Academy Award for her performance in the film \u201cPaper Moon,\u201d which she starred in alongside her father.<\/p>\n

Later, she would go on to star in films like \u201cThe Bad News Bears\u201d and \u201cLittle Darlings.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2001,\u00a0Tatum\u00a0<\/a>O\u2019Neal\u00a0<\/a>alleged to Access Hollywood\u00a0<\/a>that her father had been emotionally and physically abusive to her.<\/p>\n

Tatum O\u2019Neal and her father starred in two other films together, \u201cNickelodeon\u201d in 1976 and \u201cCircle of Two\u201d in 1981. Despite their early collaborations by the 2010s, the two had not spoken to one another for nearly three decades.<\/p>\n

In 2011, the two appeared in a brief\u00a0docuseries about their attempt to repair their estrangement, \u201cRyan and Tatum: The O\u2019Neals,<\/a>\u201d which was distributed by\u00a0Oprah Winfrey Network.<\/p>\n

They appeared to have rekindled their relationship when she posted a photo of herself and her father on his birthday.<\/p>\n
