Airbnb booking, turned into an unforgettable night filled with laughter and unexpected guests.My husband\u2019s 40th birthday was coming up, and I wanted to throw him a surprise party. To prepare for it, I told him I would be out of town on his birthday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We agreed to celebrate on another day instead. On the evening before the big day, I pretended to pack my bags and leave for the airport. In reality, I stayed overnight at my friend Karen\u2019s house. \u201cAre you sure this will work?\u201d Karen asked, raising an eyebrow as I stuffed clothes into my suitcase. \u201cAbsolutely,\u201d I replied. \u201cTom thinks I\u2019m going to visit my sister.\u201d Karen chuckled. \u201cYou\u2019re a sneaky one, Maria.\u201d The next day, I got up early to make sure everything was perfect. Tom always came home from work around 6 pm, so I invited all of his friends and family over at 5. That way, we\u2019d have time to decorate before he arrived. By 4:45, people started arriving. His brother, Jim, was first.\u201cHey, Maria! Need any help?\u201d Jim asked, carrying a box of decorations. \u201cSure, Jim. Can you start hanging these streamers?\u201d I handed him a bundle of blue and gold streamers. Next came Tom\u2019s best friend, Dave, with his wife, Lisa. \u201cWow, you\u2019ve really outdone yourself, Maria,\u201d Lisa said, admiring the decorations. \u201cThanks, Lisa! Can you guys help with the balloons?\u201d I handed them a bag of balloons. Everyone pitched in. By 5:30, the living room looked amazing. Blue and gold streamers hung from the ceiling, and balloons were everywhere. A big banner that read \u201cHappy 40th, Tom!\u201d stretched across the wall. At 5:45, I gathered everyone in the kitchen. \u201cOkay, everyone, Tom will be here soon. Let\u2019s turn off the lights and hide,\u201d I said, feeling the excitement build.We all found spots behind the kitchen counter and other hiding places. My heart was racing as we waited in the dark. I held my breath when I heard the key turn in the lock. The door opened, and I heard footsteps. But then I heard a woman\u2019s voice. \u201cDo you think he\u2019ll like it?\u201d the voice said. My heart dropped. Who was she? For a moment, I thought Tom was cheating on me. The lights flicked on, and the whole room gasped. Standing in the doorway was a young couple, looking just as shocked as we were. The woman had a suitcase in her hand, and the man was holding a set of keys. \u201cWho are you?\u201d I blurted out, stepping forward. The woman\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cWho are we? Who are you?\u201d she exclaimed.Jim stepped out from behind the counter. \u201cWe\u2019re here for a surprise party. Who are you guys?\u201d The man looked around, bewildered. \u201cWe rented this house on Airbnb. We were supposed to stay here for a few days.\u201d I felt the color drain from my face. \u201cAirbnb? This is our house!\u201d Dave scratched his head. \u201cTom must have listed it after Maria said she was going out of town.\u201d The woman looked at me sympathetically. \u201cOh my gosh, we had no idea. We\u2019re so sorry. We\u2019ll leave right away.\u201d \u201cNo, no, it\u2019s okay,\u201d I said quickly, trying to keep the situation calm. \u201cLet\u2019s just figure this out.\u201d The young couple, still looking confused, stepped inside and closed the door. Everyone was murmuring, trying to piece together what was happening.Karen came over to me. \u201cMaria, what\u2019s going on?\u201d \u201cI have no idea,\u201d I whispered back. \u201cTom must have put the house on Airbnb when I told him I\u2019d be out of town.\u201d Tom\u2019s sister, Susan, walked up to the couple. \u201cHey, why don\u2019t we all sit down and talk this through?\u201d We all moved to the living room, the decorations and party supplies now feeling strangely out of place. The young couple introduced themselves as Jake and Emily. \u201cWe\u2019re really sorry about this,\u201d Jake said. \u201cWe thought the house was empty.\u201d Emily nodded. \u201cYeah, we didn\u2019t mean to crash your party.\u201d I forced a smile. \u201cIt\u2019s not your fault. This is just a big misunderstanding.\u201d I pulled out my phone and called Tom. He answered on the second ring.a\u201cHey, honey! I thought you\u2019d be on your flight by now,\u201d he said cheerfully. \u201cTom,\u201d I said, trying to keep my voice steady, \u201cdid you list our house on Airbnb?\u201d There was a pause. \u201cUh, yeah. I figured since you were going to be out of town, we could make a little extra money.\u201d I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. \u201cTom, I\u2019m not out of town. I was planning a surprise party for you. And now we\u2019ve got a house full of guests and a couple who thought they rented our place.\u201d Tom\u2019s silence was palpable. \u201cOh no, Maria, I\u2019m so sorry. I didn\u2019t know.\u201d I looked at Jake and Emily, who were sitting awkwardly on the couch. \u201cWhat do we do now?\u201d Tom sighed. \u201cI\u2019m on my way home. We\u2019ll sort this out.\u201d I hung up and turned to everyone. \u201cTom\u2019s coming home. We\u2019ve got plenty of food and drinks. Join us.\u201d Emily smiled hesitantly. \u201cAre you sure?\u201d \u201cAbsolutely,\u201d I said. \u201cThe more, the merrier.\u201d Tom arrived about fifteen minutes later, looking sheepish. He walked in and immediately apologized to everyone. \u201cI\u2019m really sorry about this,\u201d he said. \u201cI was just trying to save up some money for a vacation for Maria and me.\u201d Susan laughed. \u201cWell, you certainly surprised us, Tom.\u201d Jake and Emily ended up staying, and the party went on. They were great sports about the whole situation, and soon everyone was laughing and having a good time. \u201cCheers to unexpected guests and surprise parties,\u201d Dave toasted, raising his glass. \u201cCheers!\u201d we all echoed, clinking our glasses together. As the night went on, I couldn\u2019t help but smile. Despite the chaos, it turned out to be a night we would never forget.
