It centers on a small salivary gland, which makes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/what-is-saliva\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">saliva<\/a>\u00a0in your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/rm-quiz-what-do-you-know-about-your-teeth\" data-crosslink-type=\"tools\" data-metrics-link=\"\">mouth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens:<\/p>\n<p>Your saliva moves from a salivary gland through tiny tubes (ducts) into your mouth. One of these ducts can become damaged or blocked. This most often happens if you repeatedly bite or suck on your lower lip or cheek.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>Getting hit in the face could also disrupt the duct. Remember that \u201chead-on collision\u201d in your pickup game of basketball last month? Maybe that was the original culprit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What happens once the duct damage is done?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/allergies\/postnasal-drip\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">Mucus<\/a>\u00a0seeps out, pools, becomes walled off, and causes a cyst-like swelling. A similar buildup happens when the duct has become blocked.<\/p>\n<p>A few other common causes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A tear in a salivary gland: A bump or injury could cause swelling or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/arthritis\/about-inflammation\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">inflammation<\/a>\u00a0to the salivary gland and lead to mucus buildup.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/teen-girls-body-ear-piercing\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">Piercings<\/a>: Cysts can form because of an infection, especially with lip piercing. You should have any piercings done by a professional to assure clean, sterile instruments and avoid infections.<\/li>\n<li>Damage caused by your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/picture-of-the-teeth\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">teeth<\/a>: Not taking care of your teeth can lead to a buildup of bacteria. If not, they may recommend one of these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cancer\/what-is-a-biopsy\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">Biopsy<\/a>: Your doctor will take a tiny sample of the cyst and send it to a lab for a closer look.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/what-is-an-ultrasound\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">Ultrasound<\/a>: This uses sound waves to show images of the inside of the cyst on a computer screen.<\/li>\n<li>Computerized tomography (CT) scan: This is a series of X-rays taken at different angles; put together, they give your doctor a more detailed image of the cyst.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-page active-page\" data-page=\"2\">\n<section>\n<h2 id=\"1-4\" class=\"jumplink-headers\">Oral Mucous Cyst Treatment<\/h2>\n<p>Mucoceles often go away without treatment. But sometimes they enlarge. Don\u2019t try to open them or treat them yourself. See your doctor, your child\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/pediatricians-role-twins\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">pediatrician<\/a>, or your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/oral-health-care-providers\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">dentist<\/a>\u00a0for expert advice.<\/p>\n<p>These are the two types of treatment a doctor or dentist most commonly uses:<\/p>\n<p>Removing the gland. The dentist or doctor may use a scalpel or laser to remove the salivary gland. Local anesthesia numbs the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/pain-management\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">pain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Helping a new duct to form. Called marsupialization, this technique helps a new duct form and helps saliva leave the salivary gland.<\/p>\n<p>The dentist or doctor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disinfects the area<\/li>\n<li>Puts a stitch through the mucocele and ties a knot<\/li>\n<li>Gently presses out saliva<\/li>\n<li>Removes the stitch after about a week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other types of treatment that may bring down swelling or prevent the need for surgery include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/ss\/slideshow-steroids-101\" data-crosslink-type=\"slideshow\" data-metrics-link=\"\">steroid<\/a>\u00a0shots and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/drugs\/index-drugs.aspx\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">medications<\/a>\u00a0applied to the surface of the mucocele.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2 id=\"1-6\" class=\"jumplink-headers\">Oral Mucous Cyst Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>Mucocele cysts are more unpleasant than harmful, but you still should see a specialist to take care of them. They can return after removal, and there may be pain in areas where they\u2019re removed.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware when cysts may pop up, and try to avoid the temptation to suck on your cheek or bite on your lip when they do appear.
