My best deviled eggs recipe is a combination of a few simple ingredients including hard boiled eggs, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper. That\u2019s it. Along with a little sprinkle of paprika that extra pop of flavor.<\/p>\n
Deviled eggs win as a healthy snacks or appetizer. They\u2019re easy to make, only have a handful of ingredients and most people love them.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve loved them for years, but it wasn\u2019t until recently that I asked the question that had long been rolling around in my brain \u2013 \u201cwhy are deviled eggs called that?\u201d<\/p>\n
So I Googled it. And here\u2019s the response from Wikipedia: The term \u201cdeviled\u201d, in reference to food, was in use in the 18th century with the first known print reference appearing in 1786. In the 19th century, it came to be used most often with spicy or zesty food, including eggs prepared with mustard, pepper or other ingredients stuffed in the yolk cavity.<\/p>\n
Ah, makes sense. And now you can rest assured that there\u2019s nothing truly sinister about deviled eggs!<\/p>\n
large eggs (hard-boiled, cooled & halved)
\n6 slices bacon (cooked crisp & crumbled)
\n2 teaspoons fresh chives
\n2 teaspoons white vinegar
\n2 tablespoons finely shredded mild cheddar cheese
\n1\u20444 cup sour cream or 1\u20444 cup buttermilk
\npaprika<\/p>\n
DIRECTIONS
\nTransfer egg yolks from halves to mixing bowl & combine with remaining ingredients.
\nAdd the sour cream or buttermilk last & use more as needed to reach desired smoothness.
\nSpoon yolk mixture into halves. The bulk will have grown substantially, so pile it high & \u201cdust\u201d with a sprinkle of paprika.<\/p>\n
