And suddenly\u2026 the hall burst out laughing. People laughed as if we were at a comedy show, not at a sacred ceremony. I froze, confused, not understanding what was happening. \u201cWhy are they laughing? What\u2019s so funny about my words?\u201d \u2014 I thought, bewildered.<\/p>\n

I tried to ignore it, but at one point I couldn\u2019t take it anymore and looked toward the guests. Everyone\u2019s eyes were on my groom.<\/p>\n

I also looked at him \u2014 and what I saw made my blood run cold. Behind his back, clearly visible to everyone, he held a large sign with the words: \u201cSAVE ME.\u201d<\/p>\n

In that moment, the world seemed to stop. The laughter of the guests, the priest\u2019s shocked expression \u2014 everything blurred together, while inside me pain and anger rose up. \u201cEveryone must think I\u2019m forcing him to marry me,\u201d I thought bitterly.<\/p>\n

Calmly, without a single word, I stepped closer, snatched the sign from his hands, and slowly, demonstratively, tore it into tiny pieces. The sound of the paper ripping in the silence of the church was louder than any words. The groom froze, and the guests immediately stopped laughing.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Are you mocking me? \u2014 I asked coldly, staring straight into his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u2014 It was just a joke\u2026 \u2014 he mumbled awkwardly.<\/p>\n

\u2014 A joke? At our wedding, in the church? What\u2019s so funny about that?<\/p>\n

I turned to the priest:<\/p>\n

A whisper ran through the hall, someone gasped, others lowered their eyes.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Well, I saved you. You\u2019re free.<\/p>\n

I turned around and slowly walked down the aisle toward the exit. My veil brushed lightly against the pews, while behind me rose a murmur of shocked voices. Some tried to stand up and say something, but I walked on steadily, without stopping.<\/p>\n
