I got up. I opened the closet and pulled down the faded banker\u2019s box that held our old family photos. They smelled like dust and paper and memories I couldn\u2019t carry anymore\u2014weddings, birthdays, school plays, hospital visits. Every image felt like a debt no one intended to repay.<\/p>\n
And suddenly, I knew what I had to do.<\/p>\n
At 10:15 a.m., I drove to the local historical archive\u2014the same small brick building where I\u2019d once donated Richard\u2019s military badges. The woman behind the counter, Gloria, recognized me.<\/p>\n
\u201cMargaret,\u201d she said with a soft smile. \u201cWhat brings you in?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a donation,\u201d I told her, setting the box gently on the table like it held something fragile. \u201cFamily photographs. All dated, labeled. I want them to be remembered, even if not by those in them.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked at me, then at the box, then back again.<\/p>\n
