I didn\u2019t know what to do or where to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s not the only one, many people are unaware of the vectorborne illness caused by these\u00a0pesky pests.<\/p>\n<p>Chagas is named after Carlos Ribeiro Justiniano Chagas, a Brazilian physician and researcher who identified the human case in 1909. Over the past several decades, Chagas disease is known to be prevalent in Latin America, North America, Europe, Japan and Australia.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43167\" src=\"https:\/\/hasanjasim.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/rom-665x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chagas_disease#\/media\/File:Chagoma.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">An acute Chagas disease infection with swelling of the right eye (Roma\u00f1a\u2019s sign) \/ Wikipedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kissing bugs mostly live in the walls of low-income housing in rural or suburban areas and are most active at nighttime when people are sleeping. The bug passes the T. cruzi infection by biting an animal or human, then defecating on the skin of its victim, who may accidentally scratch the spot and break the skin, or spread the feces into the eyes or mouth.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/chagas\/gen_info\/detailed.html#:~:text=Chagas%20disease%20is%20caused%20by,referred%20to%20as%20American%20trypanosomiasis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0(CDC), in Mexico, Central America, and South America, approximately 8 million people\u20136 to 7 million worldwide as reported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/chagas-disease-(american-trypanosomiasis)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0(WHO)\u2013 have Chagas disease, the majority unaware of their infection. When left untreated, the lifelong infection can be a killer. About 12,000 people die of Chagas each year, killing \u201cmore people in Latin America than any other parasite disease, including malaria,\u201d writes the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2023\/jan\/16\/the-silent-disease-chagas-is-a-killer-now-carriers-want-their-voices-heard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer endemic.<\/p>\n<p>Some people never develop symptoms but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/chagas\/gen_info\/detailed.html#:~:text=Chagas%20disease%20is%20caused%20by,referred%20to%20as%20American%20trypanosomiasis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC reports<\/a>\u00a0that decades later, 20 to 30% have cardiac complications that can lead to death, or gastrointestinal complications, which can cause severe discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>And the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/14-04-2022-world-chagas-disease-day-bringing-a-forgotten-disease-to-the-fore-of-global-attention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global case detection<\/a>\u00a0rate is only 10%, which makes treatment and prevention very difficult.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" The majority don\u2019t realize there is Chagas in Mexico.\u201dChagas is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/neglected-tropical-diseases#tab=tab_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neglected tropical disease<\/a>, meaning it\u2019s not getting attention from the global health policy agenda.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-chagas-disease-treatment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chagas disease treatment<\/h2>\n<p>Colin Forsyth, a research manager at the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi), explained that Chagas is neglected partly because \u201cit\u2019s a silent disease that stays hidden for so long in your body \u2026 because of the asymptomatic nature of the initial part of the infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referencing the poor populations, Forsyth continued, \u201cThe people affected just don\u2019t have the power to influence healthcare policy. There\u2019s this confluence of biological and social issues that keep it hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as Chagas travels to other continents, its visibility is increasing and it\u2019s now known that it can be transmitted through blood transfusions and organ transplants, and from mother to baby during pregnancy or childbirth.<\/p>\n<p>Professor David Moore, a consultant at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London, created the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclh.nhs.uk\/our-services\/find-service\/tropical-and-infectious-diseases\/uk-chagas-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chagas Hub<\/a>, a UK-based facility with the primary goal of having \u201cmore people tested and treated, and to manage the risk of transmission, which in the UK is from mother to child,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Moore said that progress in eliminating Chagas is \u201cglacial,\u201d and addressing the target set by WHO for a 2030 disease elimination, he said, \u201cI can\u2019t imagine that we\u2019ll be remotely close by 2030. That seems highly unlikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chagas can be treated with two medicines, benznidazole and nifurtimox, both on the market 50 plus years, that Moore says is \u201ctoxic, unpleasant, not particularly effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It can cure a baby but there\u2019s no guarantee the medications can prevent or curb disease progression in adults.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43169\" src=\"https:\/\/hasanjasim.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/shutterstock_2255355195.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As for severe side effects, Rodr\u00edguez remembers coming out in hives, feeling dizzy and nauseated. I want people to get tested and to get treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, they are being heard.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO established\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/14-04-2023-world-chagas-disease-day-2023-to-focus-on-integrating-universal-care-and-surveillance-at-the-primary-care-level\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Chagas Disease Day<\/a>, which runs every year on April 14, the day in 1909 when Carlos discovered the first human case.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/control-of-neglected-tropical-diseases\/ending-ntds-together-towards-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHO writes<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cGlobal targets for 2030 and milestones are set out to prevent, control, eliminate and eradicate a diverse set of 20 diseases and disease groups.\u201d This includes Chagas.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent a possible infestation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/chagas\/gen_info\/vectors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the CDC<\/a>\u00a0recommends that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seal cracks and gaps around windows, walls, roofs and doors<\/li>\n<li>Remove wood, brush and rock piles near your house<\/li>\n<li>Use screens on doors and windows and repair any holes or tears<\/li>\n<li>Seal holes and cracks leading to the attic, to crawl spaces below the house and to the outside<\/li>\n<li>Have pets sleep indoors, especially at night<\/li>\n<li>Keep your house and any outdoor pet resting areas clean, in addition to periodically checking both areas for the presence of bugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you believe you have come across a kissing bug, it is advised by the CDC not to crush it.
