When Alcala heard that John was retiring, he reached out to the\u00a0nonprofit organization<\/u><\/a>\u00a0American Humane for help in transporting his best friend home for adoption.<\/p>\n

When a military dog is retired from service, it can be difficult for the military to track down the animal\u2019s most recent handler for adoption and navigate the complex logistics of transporting the animal home.
\nAmerican Humane, based in Washington, D.C., handles the process of international and national transport \u2014 including the paperwork, red tape and associated costs \u2014 to enable retired\u00a0K-9 veterans<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to be adopted by their former handlers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I found out John was up for retirement, of course, I wanted him so bad,\u201d said Alcala in an interview with American Humane. \u201cI heard about American Humane through a buddy of mine, so I thought I would reach out and see what they could do for me and John.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were gracious to help go pick him up in Hawaii and transport him back to me, without me having to pay anything. It\u2019s been a blessing for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
