the Detroit Free Press found Trump leading Biden in that state by 7 points, his biggest lead over the current commander-in-chief in the must-win state this election cycle. Trump won Michigan in 2016, but Biden won in 2020.
“It’s only going to add to the pressure on Biden to step aside and have someone replace him,” said Bernie Porn, the pollster for EPIC-MRA in Lansing, which conducted the survey of 600 voters for the Free Press and its media partners. “The Democrats are in a difficult position.”
The outlet reported:
The poll showed Trump, who held a rally in Grand Rapids on Saturday evening, leading Biden 49%-42% in a head-to-head matchup, with 9% undecided, saying they would vote for neither or refusing to answer. In a five-way race, Trump led with 43% to 36% for Biden, 8% for independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and 2% each for Green Party candidate Jill Stein and independent Cornel West. Again 9% said they either would not vote for president, pick someone else or were undecided.
Trump led in every region of the state, including in metro Detroit — defined as Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties and seen as the most predominantly Democratic region in Michigan — where he held a slim but remarkable 46%-44% edge in the head-to-head matchup with Biden and a 43%-38% margin in the five-way race.
Four years ago, Biden beat Trump in the Metro Detroit region 56-40 percent, the outlet noted.
The survey comes just days after the former president survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pa.
Porn, who has been conducting surveys in Michigan for many years, mentioned that he couldn’t recall a recent poll he conducted that indicated a Republican candidate was leading the state as strongly as a former Vice President George H.W. Bush did when he won the presidency in 1988. Bush was the final Republican to secure victory in Michigan until Donald Trump narrowly won the state in 2016, defeating the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton by just two-tenths of a percentage point, the DFP reported.
Meanwhile, a national Muslim activist group called “Abandon Biden” is organizing operations in nine swing states to prevent President Joe Biden from winning reelection in November in response to his handling of the Israel and Hamas war, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported in May.
The outlet noted that the group is not supportive of Trump, either, but would be okay with him winning another term if it meant Biden would be defeated:
Abdel Salam, 48, is among a group of Muslim activists, including several Minnesotans, who are organizing in nine swing states in opposition to Biden’s re-election. The group’s leaders say they want to politically punish the president for what they describe as enabling mass civilian casualties in Gaza.
Salam, a University of Minnesota human rights professor, left the campus in April to help lead the movement.
The report indicates that the group prioritizes punishing Biden over preventing a second Trump presidency. Additionally, Salam told the Tribune that a Biden loss over his Israel-Hamas policies would significantly shift the pro-Palestinian stance to become the mainstream view of the Democrat Party.
He said he and other Abandon Biden leaders are evaluating third-party candidates and plan to make an endorsement this summer. But if Trump wins because of their work, “the big gift that would come out of punishing the president is that an entire party … becomes a pro-Palestinian party against the occupation and will begin to look for equity much more aggressively than we have in the past,” Abdel Salam said.
