The virus typically thrives in temperate climates where its primary carriers, mosquitoes, are most active. In the United States, August and September are peak months for the virus. As of August 20, preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 216 cases across 33 states, including 142 neuroinvasive cases, the Washington Examiner reported.
