Ushers Carry ‘Barbie and Ken’ Onto the Dance Floor – What Follows is Fantastic

The Barbie doll was introduced by Mattel, Inc. in 1959 and quickly became one of the most iconic toys of the 20th century. The doll was the brainchild of Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, who was inspired by her daughter’s fascination with paper dolls. Ruth wanted to create a doll that would allow young girls to play out different scenarios and aspirations, and thus Barbie was born.

The first Barbie doll was introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York City, and she quickly became a sensation, with millions of dolls sold in the first few years. Two years later, Mattel introduced the companion Ken doll. Named after Ruth Handler’s son, the Ken doll was designed to be Barbie’s boyfriend or male companion.

Nearly 40 years later, the Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group Aqua, released the song “Barbie Girl” that, to a large extent, made fun of the whole Barbie culture and became an iconic song of the late 1990s.

With all of that as a backdrop, champion ballroom dancers Alexander and Veronika Voskalchuk of Miami, Florida, put together this wonderful ballroom routine that starts out as if they are Barbie and Ken but flows into a beautiful, elegant ballroom routine before ending up back as Barbie and Ken. There’s a reason this video gained nearly 6 million views–it’s that fun. Watch the full video below and please leave us a Facebook comment to let us know what you thought!
