Her mother started crying, pleading, “Please, don’t get mad at me. I’m sorry. I’ll change.”

She told her mother to gather her things and leave, knowing in her heart that her mother’s return was not out of love but out of self-interest. She had come back only because she learned of Sue’s success, hoping to benefit from it.

That night, Sue found herself at Rosa’s house, the only place that had ever felt like home. Rosa comforted her, reminding her, “You took a chance on someone you loved—that’s what matters.
