The policeman, Officer Daniels, noticed her approach. Years on the force had trained him to recognize distress, and this girl radiated it. Her clothes were rumpled, her hair in disarray, and there was a certain wildness in her gaze. He stepped forward, ready to offer assistance, when she halted just a few feet away, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps.
“Help,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, yet filled with a gravity that commanded immediate attention. “They’re coming.”
