“Hold up!” Hargrave called out as he jogged toward the truck, struggling to hold the dog back. The sanitation crew paused, confused, and one of the workers, Luis Romero, climbed down from the cab.
“Something in there?” Romero asked, glancing at the open back of the truck.
Ranger whined and pulled harder, circling near the compactor like he had to get inside. Trusting his partner’s instincts, Hargrave climbed up with Romero to take a closer look. That’s when they heard it — a faint sound, muffled but unmistakable.
It was a cry. Weak, fragile, and heartbreakingly human.
