Michael turned off the avenue. Just a few more meters and he would reach the maternity ward. He was driving in a good mood: there were flowers, bags from a baby store, and a brand-new car seat for the newborn in the car. Today he was supposed to take his niece and her son home.

He parked near the entrance, got out of the car, and walked toward the steps, looking around. There were many people: men with bouquets, women with bags, the usual bustle outside the maternity ward. And that was exactly why he didn’t immediately understand what made him stop.

A woman was sitting on a bench near the entrance. She was wearing hospital clothes, holding a bundle in her arms, and staring at one point.

Michael recognized her instantly.

“Anna?” he said, unable to believe his eyes.

She raised her head. Michael noticed that she was trembling from the cold and that her lips had turned blue. In her arms, she was tightly holding her newborn son. Michael didn’t ask unnecessary questions. He took off his coat, wrapped his niece in it, carefully lifted her together with the baby, and carried them to the car.

“Where is your husband? Where is your car?” he asked.

Anna opened the messages on her phone and handed it to her uncle. Michael read in horror: “The apartment is ours now. We left your things by the entrance. Forget about us — we don’t need this child.”

Michael reread the message several times, as if hoping something would change. Then he looked at his niece, and she quietly said that Maksim hadn’t left without a reason. He had long been having a secret affair with her mother. While Anna was pregnant, they had decided everything between themselves. On the day of her discharge, they simply threw her out, without even giving her a chance to take her belongings.

Michael turned pale. He didn’t say anything, only gripped the phone tighter. Then he dialed a number and spoke calmly, almost casually:
