Holding our two kids’ hands, I rushed home to tell my husband I had inherited $24 million and a skyscraper in New York City.

Holding both of our children’s hands, I hurried home to tell my husband that I had inherited $24 million and a skyscraper in New York City. But he and his mistress were already waiting on the porch with divorce papers. She smirked, “Pack your bags. This house has no room for a leech.” I smiled. “Actually, this house belongs to…”

Holding our two kids by the hand, I rushed up Maplewood Lane with my heart pounding so loudly that I could barely hear eight-year-old Lily asking why I was crying.

I was not sad.

I had just left the offices of Franklin & Meyers, where a silver-haired lawyer told me that my late aunt, Margaret Whitmore, had left me twenty-four million dollars, majority ownership of Whitmore Tower in Manhattan, and legal ownership of the house where I had lived for eleven years.

The house my husband, Daniel, had always called “his.”

I wanted to tell him before the news became public. I imagined the shock on his face, his arms wrapping around me, and our children laughing because every unpaid bill, broken appliance, and humiliating sacrifice was finally behind us.

Then I turned the corner.

Daniel stood on the front porch in his navy suit, one hand tucked into his pocket and the other holding a manila folder. Beside him was Vanessa Reed, his marketing director, wearing my pearl earrings and a white dress I had found hidden in our closet three months earlier.
